5 Steps to Reach Your Goals

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

Tony Robbins

Living with autoimmune disorders can affect every part of our lives. It can make the most mundane thing on our “to-do” list difficult.  How is your autoimmune affecting your ability to reach your goals?

Are there days when you feel like Job felt: My days have passed; my goals are destroyed, my heart’s desires. Job 17:11. Let’s turn that thought around and look at it with fresh eyes: But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. 2 Chronicles 15:7

Write down your goals. This is the first step to achieving your goal. Anyone can talk about what they want to do, but when it is written down, the goal is more than just a wish, now it can start taking form.

Be specific when you write your goal down. Narrow your focus and break the goal down into manageable steps.

When you write your goal down, start it off with a positive statement – “I will reach my ideal weight with a healthy and manageable lifestyle change” – is better than – “For the tenth time I’m going on a diet”.

Be precise. Give your goal a date and/or time. You may have a goal that you know will not take you long to reach and you may reach it by 2:00 pm this afternoon. In order to achieve this goal, write it down on your “to-do” list for today and cross it off when you have finished.

If you are working on a long term goal, write down the manageable steps it is going to take to get there, and give each of the steps a date and time.

By being precise, you will see the results of your hard work and planning and you will have the feeling of success!

Be realistic. When we are looking at the big picture the overall goal may not be realistic:

  • I want to earn a million dollars – this goal can be achieved thru hard work and dedication, but it probably isn’t going to happen by one o’clock this afternoon.
  • I want to lose fifty pounds – again this goal can be achieved if you need to lose fifty pounds, but it is not going to happen over night. Even if you have gastric bypass surgery, it doesn’t happen overnight.

If you have a goal of wanting to earn a million dollars, write down the steps that are going to get you to putting the cash in your account. If you are wanting to lose weight evaluate what you are doing now that is keeping you at an unhealthy weight and start making a list of small attainable steps you can start doing to get you to your ideal weight.

Prioritize your goals. Once you have written down your goals, prioritize them. You can work on more than one goal at a time, so after you have broken your goals down into steps then you can put those steps on your “to-do” list everyday and cross them off when you have completed them.

Keep your “to-do” list handy. You may need to refer to it as you go through your day, to make sure you are staying on course.

Motivate yourself. Give yourself a small reward for achieving your goal. Reaching a goal is the ultimate reward, but rewards along the way for the hard work you are putting in will keep you motivated.

If you are losing weight, do not reward yourself with food. Reward yourself with clothing, exercise equipment, workout programs, or entering a physical event like a 5k or 10k walk/run.

When I was teaching, my reward for my hard work was scheduling more students and seeing my income increase. That was enough for me.

For me, step one is the most difficult. Taking the time to sit down and think about what it is that I really want and then writing it down. Writing my goals down makes them more real. If I have written down my goals and broken them down into manageable steps, then I don’t have to be afraid of my autoimmune disorders getting in the way. I know that flares will come and go and they may cause a delay in the date and time of my goal timeline. But if I keep my focus, and I have my written overall goals and my daily “to-do” list I can keep on moving forward and successfully reach my goals and you can too.

Action step: Take the time today and write down one goal that you really want to achieve. Share with us in the comment section below one goal that you have.
