Gardening is an exercise that I can totally get in to. Gardening is fun, productive, creative and relaxing.
I live in California, and I’m also in the bread basket of agriculture. We grow everything here! It’s just too bad that everything is so darn expensive!
My yard is about half the size of a postage stamp, but as you can see in the pictures below, I’m able to get a good size garden growing.
Here is a fun action step: I just paid .99 cents per green pepper at the store this weekend. In the comments section below, tell us where you are from and how much you pay for green peppers in your area.

Gardening is much more than watering the flowers. Here are the activities that are going to cause you to burn calories:
- building a raised bed
- carrying potting soil
- working a rototiller
These following activities won’t burn many calories, but they are part of the fun of gardening:
- planning the layout of the garden
- checking out gardening books at the local library
- buying seed and plants
- buying the tools you need to be a gardener
- buying the proper clothing if you are sun sensitive

What about those of you who don’t have a backyard to plant a garden?
If you really want to have fresh fruits, veggies or flowers, check out the community gardens where you live. It is a great way to meet new people, share ideas and learn about gardening.
What if you don’t have a community garden that you could be a part of?
Then I suggest you visit your local Farmer’s Market. This is the next best thing. You can talk to the farmer about their produce. Learn how it is grown and if it is organic or not. And you can also eat some amazing food that has been prepared with the produce that is for sale at the market.
Visit your local botanical garden. I use to go to the botanical garden in Des Moines, IA when I lived there. I could never get enough of that place. I even played there in a handbell choir for Christmas.

5 Reasons to Use Gardening as an Exercise
Gardening gets you out into the sunshine! We all need our daily dose of vitamin D and this is the way to get it.
How much sun do you need to be exposed to to get vitamin D? According to usnews.com, if you’re fair skinned, experts say going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun—in shorts and a tank top with no sunscreen—will give you enough radiation to produce about 10,000 international units of the vitamin.
Gardening gets you moving. If you are standing still and calling it gardening, then you must be watering the plants. A lot! Get in to it and get some dirt under those fingernails. That will give you an excuse to go to the salon and have your nails done.
Gardening causes creativity. There are so many things you can do when you are gardening to show your creative side. One example is choosing the containers you want your plants to grow in, if you are doing a patio garden.
If you are planting flowers, how are you going to lay out the plants? Will you lay the garden out by color, height, or when they flower?
Gardening gives you a reason to share. There is nothing like a good home grown beef steak tomato on a grilled hamburger. Fresh cucumbers from the garden will bring a smile to your friend’s face when you share them.
Let’s not forget, homemade zucchini bread hot out of the oven with a crust of sugar and cinnamon. My mouth is watering.
Gardening will give you a goal to set and achieve. One goal could be to actually get something to grow and be able to eat it.
Another goal could be to produce a certain amount of one type of vegetable to give away. Maybe you would like to grow enough of a certain plant, so you can “can” the produce for the winter.
Here are pictures of what I have been growing this year.
All of my veggies start out in one of these tabletop greenhouses.
I highly recommend them. The plants get a very healthy start in the greenhouse.
Here are pictures of my fruit trees.
We had one plant that showed up as a surprise, a fig! I asked the farmer at the Farmer’s Market what it was and he said it was a fig. He also said that if the seed was dropped by a bird it would not produce fruit. Well as you can see it has fruit on it, but I don’t ever remember buying it or planting it.
This is my next project. A vertical garden using a pallet. I’m really excited about this and I’ll keep you posted on how it is going.
