5 Benefits of Having a Picnic

I love picnics! I always have. When I was young and single I liked having picnics that were well planned out and had a menu that was a feast.

Today, I love the super simple picnics. Grabbing a couple bags of salads, plates, silverware, and beverages and I’m ready. All my husband and I need is a place to dine.

I never thought about there being health benefits to picnicking, but there are and here are my five favorite benefits from having a picnic.

5 Benefits of a Picnic #picnic

Picnics get you outdoors. I always plan a picnic when my husband and I go hiking. There is no better way than to relax from our hike than sitting on the boat dock with our feet in the water and having a picnic.

If this isn’t a spur of the moment picnic and I can plan ahead, then I will go all out and have the tablecloth and everything that makes a picnic special. When we go up to the foothills for a hike we have our choice of plenty of picnic tables to choose from. Sitting at the table and watching the boats on the water is wonderful.

Picnics can open the lines of communication. A picnic is a great time to put down the phones and take out the earbuds. Having music at a picnic is wonderful, but it should be shared by everyone.

Some of the best conversations that I have had with my husband is when we are on a picnic. It is a time to dream. We don’t talk about work or the things that are going on back home. We talk about what we would do if we lived on a lot of acreage, or where we would like to live when retirement comes around.

Picnics are a great time to eat healthy. I remember seeing in movies or reading in books that fried chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad, a full pie or a two layer chocolate cake where the foods you served when you had a picnic.

Today my picnics focus on healthy alternatives. Fresh salads, sandwiches with healthy deli meats and all the veggies and condiments, and a lite dessert. After all, we have just finished hiking, so we want to make healthy choices after the workout.

Picnics are a stress reliever. I never feel stress when planning a picnic and I’m definitely not stressed while having one. The scenery around our choice of picnic tables is very relaxing. One year when we were picnicking, we had three deer come by our table.  By the end of the meal both me and my husband are relaxed and ready to call it a day and head back home.

Picnics are cheap! This is one form of entertainment that really doesn’t cost anything. I already have the food in my frig and pantry, I’m just putting it in a cooler and transporting it to somewhere wonderful.

When having a family picnic its affordable for everyone. Everyone brings their favorite food to show off and share, and the clean up is a snap!
